Since 1981, Preserving and Promoting Italian and Italian-American Heritage, Culture, and History

In 1979, a young group of Italian-Americans and native Italians began meeting together to share their heritage and traditions. This humble beginning was the start of Amici d’Italia!

Amici d’Italia means Friends of Italy. In 1981, we registered with the State of Oregon as a non-profit organization with a mission statement, constitution and by-laws. We welcome men and women of all ages as well as people of non-Italian descent – our members range in age from five to ninety-four!

The Amici d’Italia meets January through November on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM in Carvlin Hall at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. The church is located at SE 16th and Division Street in the historic Ladd’s Addition area in Portland, first settled by Italian immigrants moving across the river from South Portland in the 1930’s.

Our meetings begin with a quick business session followed by the evening’s program, which might include a guest speaker, cooking demonstration, slide presentation or visit by a local prominent Italian personality. Italian potluck dinners, recipe night, and ice cream socials are also included in our yearly schedule. Every meeting always features delicious refreshments.

We schedule other activities throughout the year, including wine tastings; movie nights; visits to local wineries and joining other Italian clubs in presenting the annual Festa della Befana, La Polenta Italian Community Dinner, Festa Italiana, and the Columbus Day Italian Heritage Banquet.

In the summer, we get together for a picnic featuring our famous “Bocce-on-the-Turf” bocce tournament, and in December we host one of the largest Italian Christmas Potluck Dinners in Portland. We also meet for dinners in Italian restaurants, and participate in local parades and celebrations.

We invite you to join us at one of our monthly meetings!  Contact President Theresa Rossetto Berney at or at her home 503-285-4068 or cell 971-235-5419.
