On April 4, as part of their Lenten Project, several members of the Peace and Justice Commission visited Yellow Brick Road, an organization located in downtown Portland that serves homeless youth. Members of the commission treated the  young people to pizza and soft drinks and provided 14 movie vouchers and transit tickets. Funds to pay for these gifts came from money left over from the commission's annual Thanksgiving Day dinner.

Yellow Brick Road is a volunteer-based street outreach program that works in conjunction with Janus Youth to provide services to homeless youth including first aid and hygiene supplies to young people living on the streets. The building that houses Yellow Brick Road has showers, laundry facilities, a kitchen, books and games, and internet access,. Porch Light Shelter and Street Light Shelter provide dormitory style beds with separate rooms for men and women.  Free clothing and other supplies like rain gear, coats, backpacks and sleeping bags are also provided. Peace and Justice Commission members invite members of St. Phillip Neri parish to keep these homeless young people in mind when cleaning out closets at home. Yellow Brick Road will accept donations of clean clothing, sleeping bags, unused/unopened bath soap and other toiletries, and feminine hygiene products.  The items can be taken to Janus Youth at 707 NE Couch.  Please mark the items for Yellow Brick Road

Every night of the year Yellow Brick Road community volunteer teams and professional staff walk the streets of downtown Portland to make contact with homeless youth to build trust, help meet their immediate needs, and link them with services to help them get off the streets. Let's remember to include these young people and the staff and volunteers in our prayers.
